IFAT 2012

Visit Heraeus Noblelight at the IFAT Entsorga 2012, the world's most important trade fair for innovation and services in the field of water, sewage, waste and raw materials management.
Everybody knows it: The smell of roasting and frying in the kitchen. The odour not only gets into your nose but the fat contained in the fumes also leaves traces on surfaces in the kitchen. Heraeus Noblelight has developed special vacuum UV emitters for kitchen exhaust air. In the wavelength range of 185 nm (VUV), the fat molecules and odours are photolysed, destroyed and in this way neutralised. At the same time, the vacuum UV radiation generates ozone from the oxygen in the air around the lamp. The ozone decomposes to form excited oxygen which has an oxidising effect in the extractor pipe and keeps the inner pipe surface clean. This considerably facilitates the cleaning of the air duct. Instead of cleaning the extractor pipe by hand every day, manual cleaning is thus almost unnecessary.

World Water Day 2012 – Water and Food Security
-
This year's World Water Day, organized by the United Nations on March 22nd, wants to make us aware of the danger of the increasing shortage of clean water and promote careful use of water.
„Water and Food Security“ is the theme of the World Water Day. Most of the water - some 70 percent of global consumption - is used in the production, processing and packaging of food. In the year 2012, seven billion people need to be fed on our planet. Demand for clean water is growing and at the same time, the resource is becoming ever scarcer due to overuse and pollution by people and the industry.
The Heraeus Noblelight UV technology is used to purify waste water for re-use or recycling. Without the use of chemicals such as chlorine or ozone, special UV lamps not only destroy microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi but also decompose chemicals that are detrimental to health.
A large number of applications such as drinking-water purification, process water in beverage and food production and fish farming use UV light.

At IPACK IMA 2012, Heraeus Noblelight presents the new powerful Premium UV module for UV disinfection in the food industry.
-
Hygiene and sterility are indispensable during the production, processing, filling and packaging of food. Disinfection with ultraviolet light is an economic and environmentally friendly method to significantly reduce active germs during these processes. This can improve product quality and extend the shelf-life of food. Moreover, less bad products are returned. This saves the time, cost and expenditure for their disposal.
The new powerful Premium UV modules have been developed especially for UV disinfection in the food industry and they kill up to 99.9% of germs. The high UV intensities and a significantly longer service life are a result of the novel emitter technology.

New high-performance UV module for disinfection of packaging materials
-
Microbiologically sensitive bulk products such as foodstuffs demand hygienic packaging materials. Practical applications include filling and sealing machines for dairy products and beverages where the packing materials are efficiently sterilised with UV radiation. This greatly extends the products' storage life and the number of returns of food gone bad is reduced. Manufacturers benefit by saving time, effort and money.
The new Premium UV Module by Heraeus now even more thoroughly disinfects packaging materials, mainly for fresh products in paste or liquid form stored along the cold chain. Ultraviolet light at wavelengths around 254 nm destroys the DNA of all microorganisms. Due to the directed application of the UV light, it takes just seconds to deactivate viruses and kill microorganisms such as bacteria, yeasts and fungi in an environmentally friendly manner because no chemicals are used.
The service life of the UV lamp installed in the Premium Module is 12,000 operating hours, so it can be effectively used for two years in 24 hour operation. During that time, a Premium UV Module can disinfect e.g. some 86 million cups. Breaking down the initial capital expenditure to a single cup results in a lot less than one cent per cup.

Advanced ultraviolet technology disinfects water in zoos and aquariums without the use of chemicals
In memory of the opening of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm on 5 June 1972, the UN and later on the Federal Republic of Germany have declared the 5th June of each year to be "Environment Day". Global warming, climate change, drinking-water pollution or greenhouse gases - our environment is exposed to ever growing burdens. With intelligent product solutions in a multitude of fields and in varied ways, Heraeus is helping to protect the environment, e.g. with the treatment of drinking-water with ultraviolet emitters. Animals in zoos also benefit from the environmentally friendly disinfection method.

Ultraviolet technologies from Heraeus help analyze and purify drinking water – Clean water is a human right
"Water for Cities: Responding to the Urban Challenge" is the theme of this year’s World Water Day, which the United Nations (UN) holds annually on March 22. The fact that drinking water is an increasingly scarce resource makes it all the more important to analyze available fresh water and purify it effectively. The UN estimates that more than 800 million people around the world have no access to safe drinking water. Contaminated water kills more people worldwide than AIDS, malaria, and measles combined. Access to clean water has been declared a human right with its inclusion in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Heraeus’ intelligent product solutions and ultraviolet technologies help enable sustainable and environmentally friendly analysis and disinfection of drinking water, benefitting even such megacities as New York.

Whether for cooking, in agriculture or for the production of industrial products: water is used everywhere – a valuable commodity which we need to use economically and secure for our future. Optical technologies make an important contribution to the recycling of polluted water.
Heraeus Noblelight UV amalgam lamps sterilise more than 90,000 litres of water per second in modern waterworks: the ultraviolet radiation kills bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi in an environmentally friendly fashion – completely without the use of chemicals.
Link to UV amalgam lampsIn the context of an exhibition, the members of the Light Alliance try to present the bandwidth of optical technologies in an appealing manner. Heraeus Noblelight and another ten renowned companies are members of the Light Alliance, an initiative aiming to raise awareness for the industry and its potential.
